In fact, at one point during my trip, I was worried that my skirt was too short and my mom looked at me like I was crazy. I cannot wait to go back.
Lebanese women wear all kinds of things, but I can't say I saw women wearing shorts on the street; maybe at the beach; however, short skirts, yes. I do know some American women when I was there wore shorts, but the long variety. In the past Lebanese women have worn very very short shorts, but these days I haven't seen that. Some women were clothes with a lot of coverage; some women wear very form fitting and short outfits.
However, although it may be women wear some shorts some places on the street, I personally wouldn't advise it. Almost anything else goes, but I haven't seen shorts much, for whatever reason. It may be fashion, but it may not be, despite what has been said elsewhere. It is hot and humid.
Personally, a skirt is cooler in that weather than almost anything else. I don't usually wear skirts, but I decided to on my last visit, just because it was so hot and because I did not see women wearing shorts the year before. The beach is entirely different. I am talking about normal dress around town in Beirut. I was told also by people, you can wear shorts, but again, I would not have felt comfortable doing so because I did not see ANY other women wearing shorts , except for 1 woman in our American reunion group.
You can wear just about anything else. Long skirts are of course acceptable, if that's what you want to wear. I am lebanese wowman and have been living here for 10 years. I wear shorts and skimpy tops all day long all over beirut and nobody cares.
All Lebanese women wear skimpy cloths, especially when going out at night, u will notice that the tops gets smaller and the skirts shorter. Shorts are in fashion now so dont worry about. I just returned recently from a two-week trip to Lebanon and agree with one of the earlier posts - I think Lebanese women don't wear shorts because most shorts are just too casual, and not stylish enough for the Lebanese women!
It is hot and humid in the summer so you need clothing that will be comfortable in that weather. It gets cooler in the mountains. Linens, lightweight fabrics are good and anyone telling you that your clothes have to be long may not be considering how the Lebanese women some of them dress! Looking good, going to the salon for the obligatory French pedicure and hair styling seemed to be a big priority for some Lebanese women, especially in Beirut - it can all be a bit much but they do look pulled together when they go out.
The Lebanese women are very stylish - they are not that into casual, you would see jeans, but paired with some 4-inch heels and a beautiful top. They are always pulled-together, makeup, handbag and of course the coordinated jewelry and high heels. As there are lots of places to shop, I found myself buying a new handbag, shoes, clothes etc Even at the beach resorts I saw some women tripping around in heels with their bikinis and big sunglasses.
As for why you've been told to wear long stuff, you will of course see certain Muslim women who don't have that done-up look, wearing long drapey clothing and headscarves some scarves are really colourful and beautiful , but unless you are at some religious location you shouldn't feel that you need to dress as they do Those more conservatively dressed Muslim women are right beside other Lebanese women who really are more dressed-up than you would see on the streets of any NA city.
That mix of all kinds of people that you see on the street was one of the fascinating things about Beirut. TripAdvisor staff removed this post either because the author requested it, or because it did not meet TripAdvisor's forum guidelines.
